Who is the Customer/User?
2025 is the year the TA/RecOps pivots to thinking about itself as a product team. To get there, though, we will need to start thinking like product managers. One thing product managers do best is define their customer/user.
Well isn’t TA/Recruiting the customer/user of TA/RecOps?
Great question and the answer is actually that it isn’t exactly clear yet. For some organizations, it absolutely is with the two teams working hand in hand always. But for some companies, maybe it is the hiring team or the candidates or the company. The convoluted nature of who is our customer/user means structuring and reporting on our data for impact is tough and inconsistent. This then creates downstream impacts on the strategic success of the function.
Hmmm, there has to be an industry standard that all TA/RecOps teams follow, right? It's like a one-size-fits-all approach.
Nope - every company is different, which adds layers of complexity. Additionally, when new people join the organization and bring views from their previous companies, they also might have a differing opinion. Depending on how they assert that opinion, you might end up with two teams operating differently.
This has to change with AI though, right?
AI can certainly help but for it to be the most effective, we have to show it what good looks like first.
Alright, in the near term at least, what should we do?
Build a culture of curiosity within your team and encourage ongoing discussions with all your stakeholder groups. Stay as adaptable, both in processes and personally, as you can.
If your company is in the right place, open the conversation and clarify the customer/user. To help, bring a process map that shows the stakeholders at each stage.
If you must present data, aim to tie it to business initiatives or impacts beyond just the TA team. Positioning data in this way will show strategic value.
