Why and How by Jeremy Lyons
Around this time two years ago, I wrote a piece called RecOps Starts with Why. At the time, this resonated with folks in the RecOps community because Why questions often guide much of our work (e.g., Why does the data show X?, Why is the process this way? Why is this workflow inefficient). Without a Why, we’ll get the work done but it might feel empty or like our best work. However, the Why questions we ask might hold some of us from the strategic and leadership conversations because Why questions can often be confused for needing direction as opposed to providing a constellation we are aiming towards.
José Cong, in his keynote at the RecOps Conference, emphasized a key element that can turn that around for RecOps professionals: the introduction of How in the partnership. How provides a strategic element to the Why by demonstrating that we have already thought through a few ways to accomplish a task and the trade-offs. So, for your next meeting, work on pairing the Why with the How and see how that helps position you for future success.

#YourNextHire / People Looking In the RecOps Community
Short Bio
As a proven problem solver with bias for action I solely scaled the global recruiting ops function at a public tech company of 2000+ headcount, and strategically consolidated our tech stack resulting in cost savings of over $250,000. Most notably, I led the ATS migration from Lever to Greenhouse and pioneered our first ATS<>Workday integration in order to automate manual data entry and promote data integrity. My ability to extract actionable insights and flip them into strategic initiatives also boasted a 10% reduction in time to hire QoQ. I'm hungry to build up another recops program or find ways to optimize existing ones and drive value right back to a business!
