Cheers by Jeremy Lyons
Cheers is a lot of things. A popular sitcom from the 1980s: Yes. A word to express happiness and delight: Also yes. A culturally send off if you’re British? Check and check Is it a proper sign-off after delivering sad or negative news? Abso-fucking-lutey not.
Jeez, Jeremy, tell me how you really feel.
If you sign off an email after delivering negative news (e.g., an offer rescinding, a decline, a canceled interview, etc), it doesn’t matter how empathetic you’ve been through the entire interview process; you’ve just blown all of it up in one word and deserve every amount of vitriol coming your way. Remember, human emotion is the most combustible element on the planet. When you deliver negative news to a candidate, it isn’t about you or your public persona. It is about the person receiving what you have to tell them and you don’t know their situation. You don’t know if this news is their last hope at saving their house, car, or getting medicine.
Other reasons to not use it: you don’t know if the candidate is a recovering alcoholic, the phrase could be seen as a microaggression, etc.
So, are you encouraging people to deliver motion-less and robotic responses?
That isn’t what I’m saying at all. I’m just encouraging individuals to think diligently about their word choice and not try to reinvent the wheel with an unconventional sign off. A “sincerely” or “thank you for understanding” or “let me know if you’d like to discuss further” or “best” all work.
Should RecOps teams keep a list of approved sign-offs for their recruiting partners to use?
Hmm, interesting idea. I think it is certainly a wise one. I think giving a list of options to choose from helps maintain the careful balance between creativity and control. You never want your recruiting partners to hear "RecOps" and immediately think KRS-One as intro music. RecOps teams should 100% advocate for recruiters not having their complimentary close as part of their email signature to avoid any possible hiccups.
Was there a catalyst for all this by the way?
Yes, not only has it happened to me but I also saw it on this viral post. As a candidate advocate, I thought it was important to take a position.
