Does TA/RecOps Need a Rotary Club-Style Four-Way Test? by Jeremy Lyons
This week was one for the books when it came to fun and RecOps.
Joined amazing panels hosted by Gem and AssessFirst featuring amazing folks like Lauren Tait, Sophie Bullock, Megan Batterbury, Robyn Watson, Lindsey Sailors, and Tony Le
The spicy takes I’ve been doing for years have kicked off a fun, soon-to-be-released video series helmed by the always puny Brandon Jeffs. Here is my favorite photo from our shoot with Steve Bartel:
Finally got to meet Ben Lee, Monika Evje, Blake Jackson, Adam Ward and Tony in-person and see the legendary Mike Joyner let his hair down.
Got to see some new features that Gem is releasing.
I didn't come to hear about your week. I came to hear where the Rotary Club comes into this.
As I wandered around outside of the Gem office, I stumbled across this placard on a building:
I’d never heard of the Rotary Club’s Four-Way Test, which is:
Is it the truth?
Is it fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendship?
Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
And this got me thinking, “Should TA/RecOps have something similar”?
Ok, what would the pros and cons be if we did?
Pro:
Standardization of building programs and processes
An ethical guide when asked to do something we know is wrong (e.g., implement a screening process we know will disproportionately impact one group over another)
Expectation setting for RecTech vendors
Con
Lack of an enforcement mechanism
Lack of full adoption/understanding
Why?
So with those in mind, where do you stand?
Excellent question and I’m still working through it if I’m being honest. On one hand, I think there could be tremendous benefits because it provides an excellent default framework. Having one would align with what I talked about at the RecOps Conference last year about having standardization in our space, On the other hand, I wonder if having one would create inflexible dogmatic principles in the space, over-engineering it. We need that flexibility to test new things and push the envelope.
I’d love to hear others’ thoughts in the comments.
