Reading the Air on Data by Jeremy Lyons
Complaining about LinkedIn is starting to become a national pastime if it wasn’t already. Some people hate how social it has become, with people out competing for Top Voice badges instead of the professional decorum it once held. Regardless of how you feel about LinkedIn, it is a treasure trove of data.
You say “Reading the air”?
Ba no Kuuki wo Yomu (場の空気を読む)
Just speaking Japanese doesn’t help.
That’s “reading the air.” Basically it is understanding the situation without words.
So, how is this important for data and for LinkedIn?
If you are paying attention, you will start to notice that certain topics flow in and out. By understanding the topics that are flowing in, you are able to get ahead of possible questions or the new shiny thing that is going to distract people. Right now, a topic that is picking up steam is data fatigue.
Data fatigue - that can’t possibly be a thing. We need data to do our jobs!
There is no argument that data is essential. The only problem is that much of the data people seek to collect, especially in Recruiting, lacks substance. Data without a story or reason are empty calories: they taste great but are not filling. Often, the requests we receive require a level of reading the air to infer their meaning and even more reading of the air to determine how we can use that data to drive change since no request is without a backstory that could lead to change.
Ugh… you go to Japan and become all cryptic and even more esoteric. Skip to the good part and just tell me what I need to know to fix it.
If you want to move from reading air to actual substance, ensure that you capture the Why whenever you get a data request. However, you should also take it a step further and ask the requestor how they want that data visualized since Dashboards are not the only way to convey important information to an audience, especially if they are looking for that data to drive a change in the future.

All of that starts however with the job description and it is no secret that a poorly written JD can lead to more unqualified candidates and a bad overall experience.
