Tea Ceremony and Recruiting Ops Strategy by Jeremy Lyons
Uh oh … I get the feeling you are about to do that thing you’ve done the last few weeks where you introduce a Japanese phrase or concept…
Guilty as charged. In this week’s edition, the phrase is ichi-go ichi-e (一期に一度). Roughly translated, it means "for this time only" and "once in a lifetime." The term encourages valuing every gathering, as each moment is unique and irreplaceable, making every experience a once-in-a-lifetime event. It was popularized because of tea ceremony. It could be likened to the Greek phrase, “You cannot step twice into the same river.”
Oh I’ve heard that last one before. But how does this connect with tea ceremony and RecOps?
In both tea ceremony and Recruiting Ops, you are dealing with two elements, a process and people, that can be different every time despite the same formula.
Hmm, that sounds like it leans more into the candidate experience piece than any other in our space.
That’s an astute observation. With the candidate experience piece, you should always be working towards developing a longer relationship not a purely transactional one. Each time the candidate meets with the interview team, they’re in a different place so each meeting should have a reverence to it. But thinking beyond that, even dashboards or processes have an element of ichi-go ichi-e because understanding and requests evolve. For example, you could present the same information every week, but each week, the people who hear it are different, and they can come to understand it.

Business Insider’s The rise of the job-search bots - Why? A few weeks ago, Brandon Jeffs’ noted that the “war for talent” wasn’t actually between companies but between companies and candidates. An offensive advantage found by candidates, like job bots that will auto-apply for you, means that companies will need to create a defensive strategy not to be left behind. And the cycle will continue.

#YourNextHire / People Looking In the RecOps Community
What I'm Looking to Do:
During my time at Epic Games, I was keen on adopting the mindset of "How do I make the lives of the people I work with easier?" It turns out this principle was not the most practical (I'm unable to revive dead pets or write blank checks), but the merits of it was integral for driving forward the projects I've delivered and processes I've improved.
Examples include: streamlining manual processes through automation and optimizing workflows; implementing information infrastructure (aka building an "intranet" + documentation + content management); leveraging data reports to inform strategy and cost-saving measures; launching and managing company-wide Recruiting programs; and a dozen other initiatives I'd love to chat about.
I was unfortunately impacted by the mass layoffs (16% reduction); nevertheless, I'm optimistic and looking forward to chatting about new opportunities :-)
Roles I'm Looking for:
Recruiting Operations Specialist/Analyst
Talent Acquisition Program/Project Manager
