Learning How to Conference by Jeremy Lyons
I’ll admit it: Until I was lucky enough to have Sarah White hit me over the head with the knowledge paddle earlier this year, I didn’t understand conferences for a couple of reasons:
I would look at the agenda and speakers, not seeing much of anything for RecOps (So me and few friends changed that last year and I’ve had the opportunity to work with a few brands this year to change that as well).
I’m an introvert about 70% of the time so the idea of being surrounded by people I didn’t know wasn’t too thrilling. I’m no longer in my college or sleepaway camp era where I could walk up to someone and be like “I like your shirt - can we be friends?”
I’m used to working behind the scenes so big crowds aren’t my jam and the wall is my friend.
But here is where Sarah corrected me and what I’ve learned along the way for other RecOps folks:
You aren’t really going for the content. Unless it is hyper-specific (which when I help plan conference I focus on) and small group workshops, you probably are going to hear similar things in your feed or Slack communities. That isn’t the reason to not travel or go to a conference. Which leads into number #2…
You’re going to network. This isn’t just with individual people. It is with vendors and brands. Conferences and summits are where you go to meet people face to face. This where go to get your next job because you can walk up to company table and start building a relationship or you strike up conversation with a hiring manager. If it is a vendor-driven conference, this is where you can get to talk to their internal teams about getting solutions. You also get to hear conversations about what is coming next which leads into #3…
You can make the crowd smaller. Post that you are going to a conference and see what professional connections respond. Then make plans to meet up and stick to them. Now you have people to go to talks/meals with and you have a group. The conference goes from hundreds to 10 real quick then. They will know people and can make introductions and those lead to more laughs and connections. (On that note: Thank you Brandon Jeffs for being my event buddy over the last month! While your adoption of an introvert/RecOps pro might not be tax deductable or refundable, but songs will be written about your contributions to both communities).
So, in all, don’t be afraid of conferences. Try to pick one (I know a few that are coming up towards the end of year so feel free to reach out for recommendations) and go.
