RecOps Graphic of the Week:
If you are a classic movie fan, you likely know that the GIF above is from the iconic ending to the movie Thelma and Louise. Why does it perfectly capture the relationship between Recruiting and RecOps? As an operations function, RecOps is often riding shotgun as Recruiting drives the car. This means that things recruiters say also have an impact on how people outside of recruiting perceive RecOps.
When people ask recruiters how they got into recruiting, the most common response is usually, "I fell into recruiting." You can fall into a lot of things: a pool, furniture, the Gap, or if you are Thelma and Louise, the Grand Canyon. However, it is fascinating because you would almost never hear a doctor, or engineer say, "Well, I fell into (insert profession here)."
The issue with this phrasing is that it gives the false impression that recruiting is easy instead of a skill that requires training and mastery. This perception carries into that RecOps, where it can actually cause more harm than good. With the number of pillars RecOps covers, professionals have exceedingly high-levels of technical depth and knowledge that you can't just "fall" into and expect to do well.
So instead of saying, "I fell into recruiting," it should switch to "I discovered recruiting" since it gives a nod to all the things we help companies and candidates discover on their journey.
