RecOps Conference - Call for Speakers
If you are new to this newsletter, you wouldn’t have seen the most recent update on the RecOps Conference later this year. We’re currently in the process of seeing who would be interested in speaking (thank you to the four folks who have already applied and shown interest). As a refresher, we’re still working on locking down the dates and location but we are looking for RecOps professionals to lend their expertise in making the first-ever in-person RecOps Conference experience the best yet!
Please submit your interest to speak by August 1st. Speakers will receive a 50% discount on registration and in addition, other attendees at your company will receive a 10% discount on registration costs.
Three Musicians for JDs
Every company approaches job descriptions differently. Here are a few ways to consider the pros and cons and who gets to use them if you are helping with employer branding. Note: others might have different thoughts about this, and that is ok.
The KISS Job Description
This job description aims to get the information out there. It is straightforward and simple, and it contains minimal to no flowery language.
Pro: Candidates know what they need to know to apply.
Con: Candidates might not necessarily be “excited.”
Who can use? Governments and, surprisingly, companies that sell themselves. If you are at an extremely hot company that everyone knows, most candidates are likely not reading your JD to see how eloquent it is.
The Eminem Job Description
This style of job description is an exercise in exhilarating and titillating details. They demonstrate an adoration for the full lexicon of the language, invoking imagery of the role and the company of the highest order.
Pro: The words excite and move the candidates to apply.
Con: Falling in love with the words to the point that candidates don’t know what is needed to do the job or they don’t care about the story.
Who can use it? Pre-Seed, Series A, and Series B companies where you need to build the brand while also ensuring that you’ve laid out all the details that could help filter in high-quality candidates. Additionally, this could also be used by companies who have gone through a rebrand and rename so that the market understands them.
The Taylor Swift or Jimmy Eat World Description
Let’s call this the middle. There are the occasional flourishes and innuendo, but the message is loud and clear.
Pro: Candidates get the energy, and you get high-quality applications.
Con: It can be hard to maintain the balance since without a single writer or core philosophy, some JDs will be a hit and others will fall flat.
Who can use? Technically, every company. Usually, you’ll see it in established companies that have had time to work out their core principles and how they would like those conveyed. They might even be using tools that help keep a consistent brand voice.
