Yes, and
"Yes, and..." thinking, is a rule-of-thumb in improvisational comedy that suggests that an improviser should accept what another improviser has stated ("yes") and then expand on that line of thinking ("and").
Lori Golden dropped a great post about how nuances between companies. To Yes, and on her post, I was recently told a story about a battle between coopers at a winery and whiskey distillery. As the story goes, all the coopers involved had 20+ years of experience. The coopers from the whiskey distillery (which I’ll abbreviate to WhC) went to visit the winery, and the head cooper at the winery (which I’ll abbreviate to WiC) challenged them to make a barrel exactly how they do it. The WhCs took on the challenge because they used the same tools. They failed because of the angles. The Head Cooper for the WhC, frustrated and a little embarrassed, challenged the WiCs to come to their distillery and try and make one of their barrels. The same thing happened. Moral of the Story for RecOps Folks (both those employed and those looking): Even though interviewing follows a script and likely uses the same tools, be mindful and graceful to the fact that there are subtle differences that take time to learn no matter how long you have been in this game.
Luke Eaton dropped an absolute banger on process mapping in his newsletter. To Yes, and on his process mapping, part of the RecOps mindset is the ability to look at all the micro-steps in every process, assign them an amount of time, and then figure out the best ways to eliminate, automate, or build on. It is recognizing that each of these steps, compounded over a day, even if it looks simple, ultimately adds up and, especially if they are human-driven or implemented poorly, can increase the likelihood of error.
