Cultures of RecOps Teams by Jeremy Lyons
Does your team function on the mindset of Get It Right the First Time or Edit In Post/We’ll Do It Live? At some point in the RecOps career journey and depending on your role, you will likely encounter both. So, let’s dive in.
Why are you using television/film terminology here?
It is easy for many of us to understand.
I grew up around it so I’ve incorporated a lot of the language into my day to day.
I had a conversation with my stepbrother last week. He worked in film and had the chance to work closely with my dad, and he pointed out a mindset that I likely internalized and use every day that has made me effective in some aspects of RecOps.
What is Get It Right the First Time?
When filming a TV show or movie, everything costs money (even standing around), so one extra take or one missed planned day could be the difference between coming in under/on budget or an angry phone call from a studio head. This means there is a dedication to prep work and understanding all the known knowns and known unknowns (reference last week’s issue for what those mean) before proceeding. The incentive is to get it right the first time so you don’t have to do it again and in the case of blowing up a building, a live event, or a car, you get one shot at it.
In RecOps, this manifests slightly differently (we tend to have a little bit more grace), but the idea is still the same: dedication to the upfront work. By thinking through all the possible iterations of a program/process/implementation (e.g., more prescriptive job intake syncs, etc), the time investment upfront to get it right the first time means less reactivity when something needs to pivot or change at the last minute. The drawback here is that if people like to go fast, they might see your questions as change-adverse or overly cautious.
Pro: Fewer iterations, less reactive actions, better documentation.
Con: Slower to execution, writing detailed project plans requiring multiple approvals.
What is Edit In Post/We’ll Do It Live?
You’ve likely heard the term “we’ll edit in post” or are familiar with Bill O’Reilly’s freak out/DeadMau5’ To Play Us Out. Post here means post-production. Post-production is the process after the show or movie has been filmed and is now being edited together. This is also where any problem gets fixed, lest you want to end up on a list documenting your mistake. To say, though, “We’ll edit in post,” means you know something is wrong, but to stay on track, you are moving forward. Essentially you aren’t letting perfect get in the way of good.
In RecOps, this might manifest as a quick rollout, process change, or report where you are going to ask for forgiveness, not permission, or a hard pivot without informing all the stakeholders. Yes, it can pay off beautifully and no one would ever know. Everyone could think you are a fantastic innovator and quick on your feet. It can also blow up spectacularly, and if you aren’t in the right place, you could end up shouldering the blame.
Pro: Quicker innovations, less writing of documentation
Con: More iterations, more reactive, minimal documentation/continuity
How do you know which culture you are in?
If you are already at a company, it will be easy. Take a look at your work processes. Do you/your team make time to talk through everything before it happens or once you log on for the day is it all gas - no brakes? Do you find your processes to be methodical or more edit as we go?
But say you are interviewing for a new role. How do you suss this out? By asking the following questions you might be able to find out more:
We need to launch a new project. Walk me through how the team would currently go about doing this.
What process does the team follow if they want to change a process or implement a new program/process?
Do you have a documentation library that captures why we’ve made changes and why?
Which is better?
Truth is that is up to you and your style. Some people love the adrenaline of Edit in Post, while some folks prefer Get It Right the First Time. The real piece is what works best for your work-life balance.
